Peri Menopause Symptoms

Menopause and weight gain

Studies show that about 90 percent of menopausal women experience weight gain between ages 35 to 55.

Medical experts say that menopause occurs when a woman's ovaries have stopped producing estrogen which is responsible for ovulation and menstruation. Today, more and more women who are experiencing menopause experience weight gain due to hormonal changes in their body at this time. Experts explain that with aging, the muscles in the body start to decrease in bulk along with the slowing of metabolism. This slowing down of metabolism along with decrease in bulk of the body's muscles contributes a lot to weight gain.

Aside from weight gain, menopause may also leads to loss of sexual appetite or loss of libido and growth or loss of hair in the head and face. It is not surprising that women who are experiencing menopause lose self-confidence and esteem during this period, but with the help of science and modern research, weight gain during menopausal years can be controlled.

THE UNAVOIDABLE WEIGHT GAIN

Usually, women gain about 10 to15 pounds during the menopausal years. Studies show that weight gain on women usually starts during their pre-menopausal years and will continue through that period and often after.

Because of the drastic change in their weight or size, many women dread the thought of menopausal, so they exercise as much as they can and eat less and less without realsiing that these don't have anything to do with their sudden weight gain. Experts say that women should be more aware when they are entering the stage of menopause so they can prepare for it. Physicians say that women should expect that as they enter the early stages of menopause, they will have difficulty maintaining their weight because of the fluctuation in their hormones. Because of these natural hormonal changes, that include estrogen, testosterone, and androgen levels, a woman's appetite, metabolism and fat storage are affected.

UNVEILING THE REASONS BEHIND WEIGHT GAIN DURING MENOPAUSE

Understand the reasons behind it so you can make the necessary adjustments.

1. Hormone deficiency and lack of female hormones that slows down metabolism. Lack of estrogen leads to excessive weight gain because it alters certain functions of the body and greatly influences fat distribution in the body. Consult your physician about hormone replacement thearpy during this period.

2. Slow metabolism. As people grow older their metabolism starts to slow down. Women who are experiencing menopause are recommended to have a balanced diet composed of whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables. These foods will help keep the energy level high and will assist in keeping the weight down.

3. Lack of exercise or physical activity. As women enter their menopausal stage, there is a natural slowing down of the body. An inactive lifestyle leads to weight gain because of not getting enough physical exercise. If muscle pains are giving you a hard time, do simple and regular exercises; try taking a vitamin and mineral supplement that contain calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, chromium and selenium to boost your energy levels

4. The use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can also be a big factor in gaining weight. Although HRT is replace lost female hormones, this treatment can also have the side effect of weight gain. If this is happening to you, consult your physician.

5. Weight gain can also be traced to increased food intake due to emotional problems such depression. Emotional eating or overeating due to frustration is also a big factor that contributes to weight gain duirng the menopausal years.
