WHAT IS PERI MENOPAUSE?

To most women the years between the first suspicion of change and the final menses constitute what is known as the menopausal years and women are menopausal throughout that time, with the correct term for this transition period being peri menopause. This period of transition is compared by some to non-stop PMS and by others to an extended pregnancy, so the effects of it are experienced differently by all women. It is, to all intents and purposes, a second puberty, with the hormones slowing down as opposed to puberty when they were overproducing! Peri menopause is the change from a familiar, known self to a new and unknown self and it can be amazing, difficult, rewarding and aggravating.

The physical & emotional changes that accompany puberty and peri menopause are strongly influenced both positively and negatively by various cultural, familial and personal beliefs.

If we expect our new self to be more powerful, exciting and interest ing we must willingly undergo some pain, discomfort, difficult to sleep as well as total sleeplessness, and variations and swings in our emotions and a host of other annoyances to our life.

If we expect our new self to be a weaker, less interesting, older version of our former self, we will resist changing and find that the normal abnormalities of change are almost intolerable. This is very often the situation women encounter during peri menopause.

Peri Menopause is something that happens to every woman and can occur anywhere between the ages of 30 through into the 60's, although the average age of women who enter peri menopause is 50-52. Peri menopaue (or pre menapause as it is sometimes known) can start several years before this.

Peri menopause is a natural part of a woman's life and it is different for each woman - it can occur quietly or it can be quite dramatic, disrupting our lives and those around us.

Peri Menopause is change in a woman's reproductive system; the body begins to ovulate less hence causing hormonal changes. During this period the estrogen and progesterone levels drop low enough to stop menstrual periods althogether.

The period before menopause, called peri menopause, generally occurs between 2 to 5 years before actual menopause. It has been known for women to have peri menopause symptoms 10-15 years before menopause. During this peri menopause period you can have irregular periods, breast tenderness and worsened premenstrual syndrome (PMS) as well as a low libido.

During the peri menopause time menstrual periods are often irregular and very heavy at times. Other symptoms include hot flushes from mild through to severe. Women could experience misty thinking, some have headaches, mood swings and irritability are very common, depression and anxiety, heart palpitations.

These symptoms can occur well before actual menopause and keep going well after and it is different for every woman so there are no "set rules" to follow. The hormone estrogen steadily drops for months before and after menopause so it is possible for the peri menopause symptoms to get worse. After a while the hormones will level off and the symptoms usually disappear, although some women have the symptoms beyond menopause and this period of time is called post menopause.

Peri menopause and menopause are natural parts of life; there is no treatment as such. If the symptoms are severe and interfere with your daily life and activities then making some simple changes in your lifestyle may be all that is necessary. Making an effort to eat well, avoiding a lot of caffeine and alcohol and and sterring clear of stressful situations will all assist through this period. When you get hot flushes try the controlled relaxed breathing method to reduce them and the emotional symptoms associated with them. If you think you need more assistance / relief after making the lifestyle changes then you can try other treatment for relieving the menopause symptoms such as hormone replacement therapy, with a low dose of birth control pills before menopause begins or a low dose of hormone replacement therapy after menopause begins. There are certain blood pressure medications and anti-depressants that may be prescribed to help relieve the peri menopause symptoms.
